The interviews and questionnaires were very consistent in pointing out that what attracts young people to luxury spending is the wide variety of luxury posts on social media. I also began to reflect on my own personal experiences and think about what my desire to buy luxury goods was rooted in.
I thought back to when I first arrived in Edinburgh for a language course and insisted on carrying my Dior handbag to my first class thinking it would make a good impression on my fellow students or be the popular person. However, the bag was very heavy and made me very wretched and tired that day, and I did not become popular because of it. Why would I think that this bag would make me popular? I think of the pictures posted on social media by influencers carrying luxury items to and from high end places, the exaggerated number of likes and the compliments left by others underneath might make me think that this is what makes people popular.
