Apart from the well-known vanity, why are the Chinese so obsessed with buying luxury goods? I have found another answer in our culture.
Influenced by Confucianism, there is still an invisible social hierarchy in Chinese society, and income levels and the amount of wealth one has become the criteria for classifying social classes in Chinese society today. Most Chinese people still seek to worship the rich or the upper class.
In the past it was the powerful emperors and ministers who were admired, but now it is the rich who are admired. Luxury advertisers marketed themselves as representing the rich, and naive young people started buying luxury goods because they wanted to be admired.
